History

Although officially classified as an English breed, it is most likely to have originated in China. And from a very long time ago, more than two thousand years ago to be precise. Pugs of that time differed in their coat and type, but they had one thing in common.

A short, flat and broad head. There were a total of eight types at the time, of which the lo-see was the predecessor of the modern Pug. According to some sources, they were favoured by the emperors because they could read Chinese characters in their wrinkles, so each one represented something.

Pugs are thought to have first appeared in Europe in the Netherlands thanks to the East India Company. William of Orange’s favourite was a Pug called Pompey. The four-legged creature once saved its owner’s life. During the Battle of Hermigny, he barked to warn an assassin. From then on, William of Orange’s love of pugs grew even stronger.

The breed has become very popular

In the 17th century, the breed became extremely popular. There is a wealth of surviving porcelain pug figurines to prove this. Breeding really took off in England when William III (the great-grandson of William of Orange) brought it to the country on his accession to the throne in 1688.

And a statue of the Prince of Württemberg’s pug was modelled on one, which stands in the garden of Winnenden Castle. The work symbolises the dog’s loyalty. Lost during a battle against the Turks, he later found his way home on his own.

Its popularity declined in the 18th century, but thanks to enthusiastic breeders the breed survived. At the time, it was fashionable to clip Pug ears, but Queen Victoria banned this. By the 19th century, pug-nosed dogs were appearing more and more often in the homes of the upper classes. In 2010, the compressed nose and bulging eyes were removed from the standard in the interests of Pug health. There are countries where all Pugs are tested to see if they can be bred for their potential. In some countries, it is even a punishable offence to have too many wrinkles on the nose, as it is considered cruelty to animals.

Character

The Pug is a very funny, humorous character. He is well-balanced and friendly to almost everyone. There is a complete lack of malice and aggression. He finds common ground with everyone and does not get excited unnecessarily. His motto could be: live and let live! He is also great with children, always up for a game. As a puppy, she needs consistent training as she can be a very stubborn creature. He should not be underestimated or taken lightly, because he understands. Contrary to misconceptions, he is smart, especially his emotional intelligence is very high. He always knows how to cheer up his beloved owner.

Ideal enviroment

The Pug is the ideal companion for almost everyone. It finds a common voice with both the elderly and children. It is extremely adaptable and will become whatever its owner wants it to be. He loves to play, chase, but he should not be overfed. He does not need much exercise, but as he tends to gain weight, he should be taken for regular walks and play. It is an excellent choice for both flats and garden houses. He is very sensitive to summer heat, and because of his short nose, it doesn’t even have to be hot weather to make him feel unwell. Therefore, you should always ensure that he is properly cooled.

Care of the Pug

Its thick coat requires frequent combing, especially during the moulting period. Eyes and ears need special attention and regular cleaning. Wrinkles on the head must be kept dry and clean, otherwise eczema may occur.

Common health problem

Many people think that the Pug is a problem dog. However, this is not the case. Apart from its tendency to eye injuries, it has no particular health problems. Breeders are careful to ensure that their noses are not dangerously short. A breeder certainly won’t, so if you want a Pug, do your research carefully when buying from them. The characteristic snoring is not a sign of a health problem, but a breed trait, which is a result of a long palate.
