Not only humans but also dogs can have dandruff. In their case, the problem is perhaps even more disturbing, as a thick coat can only make the dry skin itch more. What could be the cause?
Dandruff is as common in dogs as it is in humans. Dandruff is a dead, dry, exfoliating epithelial cell on the surface of the skin in the hope of renewing it. For dog’s skin health is responsible for many things. It is most often blamed on over-bathing, but diet and dry, cold air can also be responsible.
The first thing to check is whether the dandruff has occurred all over the dog’s body or in a specific area. In the latter case, it is possible that there is an allergy and that the dog has been in contact with something that has caused the irritation. If the skin is red or there is hair loss in the area, the problem is probably more serious. The irritated area tends to be licked and scratched, which makes the problem worse. In this case it is always worth taking him to a vet for advice. Scaly, dry, itchy skin can be caused by parasites or genetic diseases. For example, the fungus microsporum canis is one of the typical symptoms of dandruff, but seborrhoea can also cause both oily and dandruffy skin.
Like humans, dogs’ skin is affected by cold, dry weather. During the autumn-winter period, dry skin is more common, which can also cause dandruff. And
the heating season only makes things worse.
The heating dries the air and, as a result, the skin. This is even more the case in flats with panels, so it’s worth getting a humidifier. Dry air not only causes problems for the skin, but also increases the chances of allergies. The heating increases the concentration of dust in the air, which increases allergy symptoms. It also has an effect on breathing, which can cause coughing and dry throat. These can occur in your dog as well as in you, so it can be good for both of your health if you use a humidifier to try to counteract the dry air caused by heating.
But it’s not just indoors that cold air can cause dryness, it can also cause dryness outdoors. Some breeds of dog are particularly comfortable even when the thermometer reads low. But others can be very sensitive. Small, short-haired dogs may need clothing.
Internal nutrition is also responsible for skin health. If your pet is not getting the nutrients it needs, its skin and coat will show. Quality food and a carefully and expertly prepared home diet, mixed with supplements if necessary, will provide your pet with the right minerals and vitamins. Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E are great for a shiny coat and healthy skin. Dandruff caused by inadequate nutrition is most commonly found in rescued dogs. However, correct feeding can correct the problem.
Dandruff in neglected, mostly long-haired pets can be caused by poor coat condition. The matted, matted coat means that the skin cannot breathe properly. Regular brushing is also a good idea because it allows you to check your dog’s skin more thoroughly and act in time if you notice a problem.
But you shouldn’t overdo it either. Some breeds of dog need more frequent bathing than others. However, it is not advisable to overdo it with any of them. Opinions are divided on the frequency of bathing. Most experts advise that it is up to the owner to decide how often the dog needs to be thoroughly bathed. Some say every 4 weeks, others every 3 months. As many factors (coat length, activity, outdoor activities, allergies, etc.) play a role in determining this, it is better to use your own judgement. However, it is important not to do it too often, four weeks is always worth waiting. Of course, if your pet has a muddy, unpleasant smell, you can give it a bath.
Frequent washing can be harmful, however, as it strips your skin of its natural oils, making it more sensitive and susceptible to environmental stresses (e.g. pollen, skin diseases). The body tries to replenish the oils it needs as soon as possible, but typically in larger quantities. As a result, your pet’s coat will soon become greasy and smelly. It’s like how humans wash their hair: the more often you wash it, the sooner it gets greasy.
Too many baths and inappropriate shampoos can cause dandruff. Be careful when choosing the ideal product. Favour products with natural ingredients and free from harmful substances. A skin-friendly shampoo is also very important for dogs, as it is non-drying and even nourishing with a few extra ingredients. These include argan oil or olive oil, which make both the skin and coat soft.
