How does the GPS collar work?

The GPS tracker is the Global Positioning System (GPS), the acronym for and their associated ground stations. These satellites transmit unique signals to the receivers, the GPS trackers, so that users can pinpoint the location, speed and historical movements of a vehicle, person or animal wearing the tag in real time.

In practical terms, this means that the owner can check the whereabouts of their pet using an app that comes with the tracker. They can also control the operation of the tracking device.
For example, you can set up an invisible fence within a certain distance, which the phone, tablet or computer will automatically notify you if your dog or cat crosses.

The tracking device works with a rechargeable battery. Its standby time is approximately 1-2 weeks under normal use. Tracking itself is usually available for a monthly or annual fee, but the price of the device usually includes these costs.

The device is not inconvenient for the pet to wear. However, it is advisable to choose a device that is adapted to the weight and lifestyle of the dog. Basically, all GPS trackers for pets are designed to withstand the elements and have a dust, shock and waterproof coating.

Why do I need a GPS collar if the dog has been chipped?

The chip does not transmit or receive signals that can be used to determine the exact location of the animal. A microchip is used to read the basic data of the dog with a mikrochip scanner and return it to its owner.

However, if a pet accidentally gets lost, it can only be found and taken to a place with a chip scanner. Unfortunately, this is not always feasible. So a stray dog it is worth considering this investment. The price of the device starts at around 40 Euro (45 USD). However, depending on the manufacturer, the features and the price of the tracking service, this amount will definitely be higher at the end of the installation.

In what cases might you need a GPS collar?

Even if you do your best to keep your dog safe by only letting him out in a safe place, making sure there are no gaps in your garden defences or carefully closing all the doors on New Year’s Eve when the fireworks are going off, accidents can still happen.

Extra protection can be useful for an animal that suddenly gets frightened or wanders off on a hike in the woods, as it can sometimes save a life. Many people hope that their pet will find its way home easily with the help of its nose. But what if it gets stuck in a place where it can’t get out without help? Or perhaps dishonest people like the material value of his species and keep him captive?

Worrying situations are limited only by the imagination. That’s why one mobile phone operator in the country decided to launch a tracking package for pets who run away because of the noise on New Year’s Eve. With the darkness of the evening coming sooner and sooner at the end of summer, it may be worth adding a smart collar to your dog. As the sweltering days recede, most animals become more active. If your pet likes to go exploring, it’s good to know exactly where to bring him home from.
