When summer is here, many people like to lick a scoop or two of ice cream in the heat. But what is good for the owner is not necessarily good for the dog. What happens when your pet has a taste of your ice cream?

It’s not just in the movies that you see scenes of the happy owner sharing a cold treat with the dog. Many people like to surprise their happy dogs with a scoop of ice cream and they happily lick the treats. Of course, this immediately suggests that dogs like ice cream. But the fact that they are very happy to eat it does not mean that it is not dangerous for their health. That’s why it’s important to take precautions and be aware of what you’re offering to your four-legged friend.

Can dogs eat ice cream?

Whether ice cream is harmful to the health of the animal depends on the composition of the sweets and the dog’s sensitivity. Some dogs have a particularly bad reaction to certain ingredients, while others will eat anything and be fine. Of course, a lick or two can’t hurt, but you should avoid letting your dog eat ice cream, as it may not be safe. Here’s why not.

The dangers of chocolate

The consumption of chocolate is very dangerous for your dog, as the main ingredient, cocoa, contains a compound (theobromine) that is toxic to four-legged friends. Even very small amounts of it can be fatal. Side effects of eating chocolate include: vomiting, diarrhoea, rapid heartbeat, muscle cramps. So make sure you don’t give your pet chocolate ice cream or ice cream with chocolate chips or chocolate shavings.

Milk sensitivity

Some dogs may be sensitive to the ingredients of milk. On the one hand, they may be lactose intolerant and not be able to digest dairy products properly. On the other hand, they may also be allergic to milk, which can also cause various complaints. Milk is an ingredient in ice creams, so it is easy to develop mild or severe symptoms (bloating, diarrhoea, constipation).

It may cause an allergic reaction

Ice cream may contain ingredients that might cause allergic reactions in the animal. The appearance of vomiting, diarrhoea, red and itchy skin rashes can be a clear indication that the animal is sensitive to certain foods.

Coffee can be harmful

Coffee ice creams are also extremely dangerous for the dog. Consuming even a small amount of caffeine can harm its health. Particular care should be taken with sweets where coffee beans are used to decorate the treat, as eating them can cause even more serious damage. The animal may suffer from seizures and may even die if a high dose is ingested.

Artificial sweeteners

Ice cream may contain artificial sweeteners such as xylitol. If the dog eats it, it can also lead to a drop in blood sugar levels. The animal may bloat, vomit and have seizures.

Instead of ice cream

Try not to let the animal eat ice cream. Premium dog foods contain sufficient calcium and other minerals and vitamins to meet the needs of the dog. Instead of a treat for humans, choose a special treat. If you want to treat them to something refreshing, there are plenty of alternatives. For example, freeze some broth or canned pumpkin in an ice cube tray and give it to them or offer some plain yoghurt.
