Mountain lion attacks dog in house yard (video)

The security camera captured the incident, where a cougar attacked the family dog in the yard and returned to the scene a few minutes later.

In La Verne (California), a cougar attacked an unsuspecting dog. Holly, the 3-year-old giant schnauzer, fortunately escaped the encounter with only minor injuries. The video footage clearly shows that the house is located in an area surrounded by mountains and dense vegetation, where wild visitors are not uncommon. When the dog was let out into the yard around 9 o’clock, the cougar immediately appeared, holding the dog at bay for about a minute. Fortunately, the owners quickly noticed what was happening and managed to scare off the intruder with loud shouting. However, the mountain lion returned to the scene 20 minutes later, presumably hoping to still find its prey there.

Since the cougar population in America is enormous, they can be hunted year-round—even nursing females—in every state except California. We sympathize with both the owners and the dogs, but we would like to highlight two important points regarding this incident. A cougar is a wild animal that is constantly losing its habitat due to human expansion. It is not right to demonize a wild animal just because it attacks easy prey in its own habitat. The other key lesson, to quote a classic, is “there’s no problem until there’s a problem.” In our own country, wild animals can also attack dogs during walks or even inside properties. We must do everything we can to keep ourselves and our pets safe, but we should not hate a wild animal just because it is trying to survive by following its instincts.
