Not everyone appreciates it, but it is a common behaviour among dogs that wherever they can, they follow their owner. But why do they do this?
Some four-legged ones rightly receive the nickname velcro dog. This is because these dogs have a habit of walking right on their human’s heels whenever they get the chance. There are those of us who do not mind our dog following us like our shadow, but there are also those who, understandably, sometimes wish for a little solitude. Below, we briefly summarise the possible reasons why a dog follows their humans everywhere.
Although the pack theory has been attacked multiple times in recent years, no one questions that dogs are social animals. That is, they like to be in the company of dogs, animals, or, in this case, their humans.
Lately, it has become trendy to refer to ourselves, dog owners, as the dog’s parents, but this perspective has its drawbacks if someone takes it too far. Nevertheless, it is not such a far-fetched idea, especially if we have been raising our dog since puppyhood.
If we reward them with our attention or perhaps a few tasty treats when they follow us, then in addition to the social positives, our shadow is likely also hoping for something else. In a worse case, they have been frightened by something, are a little anxious, and are seeking the company of their humans, who provide them with security. In an even more unfortunate case, separation anxiety could be behind it.
There are dogs who are more attached, and, for them, companionship means always being on a human’s heels. In contrast, there are also dogs for whom simply being in the same space as their companions is enough for happiness. And, of course, we can observe all sorts of shades in between.
Even though it can be cute to have a little shadow, it is worth setting boundaries. As we can see, excessive attachment can also have unhealthy causes that can make both the dog’s and their human’s life miserable in the long run. Most people do not have the opportunity (and it would not necessarily be advisable either) to be with their dog 24 hours a day. That is why it is worth practising with our dog and teaching them that, when necessary, they can stay alone.
Another cute thing dogs tend to do is lie on their owner. Have you ever wondered why they do it? Here are five of the most common reasons.
