This mother dog heroically protected her puppies

Misura's puppies have found a safe home, but the heroic mother is still looking for an owner who will keep her happy for the rest of her life.

Misura became the heroic little mother dog who kept her six puppies alive in the street, in the freezing cold, by suckling her own body. Now sleeping warm, the puppies have found a new owner. They are now with their temporary adopter, Esther. Misura is still waiting for a permanent home.

I couldn’t say no

The Füzesabony Animal Protection Foundation has appealed for help for a small family of dogs rescued from poor conditions on their Facebook page. Eszter contacted them, but luckily their fate was resolved, but there were two other litters waiting to be rescued. “The problem was that they didn’t have two puppies, but five or six. The space requirements are completely different and I didn’t have much space or spare capacity. So I felt a bit overwhelmed when I heard about the mum plus 6 kids, but their lives were not in my hands,” recalls Eszter. She made an appointment with the Hungarian Eszkuláp Animal Welfare Association so that the litter could come under the auspices of the association. The help was not missed, and the next day the people of Füzesabony organised the transport with the help of a volunteer.

First evening

The puppies were about 4 weeks old when they arrived in the evening at their already prepared place.

I let mum Misura out to pee, she didn’t go far from her puppies. They ate, they drank, they slept all night, full bellies and warm. It’s at times like this that you can see the dogs let down from their constant alertness and really let themselves go. They are resting from weeks of cold, stress

– recalls their temporary host on the night of their arrival. For the first week or two, there is almost nothing to do, apart from fattening up Misura. The mother dog did a good job: feeding, cleaning and cleaning. The difficulty was that in the winter, such tiny dogs need a warm place to stay that is disinfected, of a suitable size and separated from other animals. Esther is already an experienced temporary fosterer, so the Misuras are now in a safe place.

6 weeks is the turning point

After the puppies reached 6 weeks of age, Esther’s tasks increased and Misura’s decreased.

You can’t really leave home, maybe for a few hours. In the meantime, you’re always wondering if they’re OK, what’s going to be waiting for you when you get home. Four feedings a day, the rest of the time non-stop cleaning. You see the poop, you take the paper towel, because we don’t change diapers for poop, it’s too expensive. You reach over to take it out, but you’re too late, and 4-5-6 puppies are waddling around in it with 16-20-24 legs, jumping on your hand

– Eszter smiles as she recounts the difficulties. You have to do a lot of laundry after such incidents, as they can get their beds and each other dirty in no time. From getting to the vet is not easy with so many puppies. They need a good supply of transport boxes, then they get their vaccinations and chips in a nice line, all the while moving around.

Cute, cute, cute

The puppies meet Esther, who sees them and can’t help but look after them as best she can.

– their temporary adopter recalls everyday life. It’s a touching moment to see the puppies start to run around, exploring the world. One of the difficulties of being a temporary adopter is that you have to screen people to find the right owners for the dogs. There are several rounds of communication between the temporary and the prospective owner.

I pick one of them up, he looks at me, slides into my palm and I can smell his slightly pee and baby-scented fur. I want them to always be safe. I can’t wait for the feeling that will come over my face when the real owner arrives. The good kind where I know the dog will get so much more than I can give. And then when the moment comes, I do grin, but behind the joy and relief is a big dose of worry. Do they have any idea what road has led me here?
