Billie, the 50 kilo Newfoundland, lives an enviable life. But he also does a lot for his health!
Billie is a truly special, lucky Newfoundland. He has his owner to thank for the latter. Nicki Dobson works at the Three Dog Bakery in Lenexa, Kansas. So it was a no-brainer who to hire for one of the most important jobs in the business.
Of course Billie! That’s how Newfoundland became a taster of the company’s products. Testing out the treats for dogs is certainly to the taste of the canine, and we’re sure any four-legged friend would be happy to swap. Usually twice a month, Newfoundland’s services are called upon to taste test new products. And every quarter, as production nears, there is an even more extensive test. As Dobson explains, they usually have between one and six four-legged colleagues in the office, as most of them bring their pets to work. “Our employees’ dogs are our colleagues,” said. Many of them have similar jobs to Billie.
An interesting question is what exactly the taste testers are supposed to taste during a tasting. One of the most important is the aroma of the product. To do this, they observe how the dog behaves when it sees the morsel. Do you smell it before you bite? Do you walk away with it? If so, do you hide it or eat it? Does it leave crumbs behind? Do you clean them up?
A next stage of tasting, where the dog can choose between two products. One is always their own, the other can be from another product range or even a competitor. These are offered to them on paper plates, waiting for their reaction. How the dog reacts to these is important. Do you smell both or just one? They then serve the food in the reverse position, filtering out side preference. (Many dogs have a dominant side, and usually turn to the side first in such experiments.)
Many foods are poisonous
It is important to point out that dogs in addition to the food they are fed they are happy to join the queue when they sniff human food. But many foods are not safe for them at all! While there are poisonous – chocolate, onions, grapes and raisins, as well as products containing alcohol and caffeine spicy, fatty foods also put a strain on their stomachs. Always make sure your pet doesn’t eat any of these!
In addition to this privileged role, Newfoundland has a very active life. With his owner they regularly attend exhibitions where Billie was voted best of breed for her excellent external features due to her excellent conformation. They also compete regularly, and the dog excels in this area, as well as charming people with her sweet nature. We think not only is Billie lucky in life, but also her owner for having found such a great companion.
