Stray dog helped little girl

A little girl from the village of Dubăsari in Moldova went to visit her grandmother in another village last week. On her way home, she wanted to take a shortcut through the forest between the two villages, but got lost. Her parents informed the authorities last Friday evening and they immediately went in search of her. Volunteers joined the authorities in the search and the child was found the following morning, unharmed.

The little girl was joined by a stray dog on the way. As he told us after the rescue, he had never seen the animal before. But it came up next to him and would not leave his side, even at night. According to a statement from the Moldovan police, this is not the first time that a lost child has been accompanied by a dog, until he is safe. In this case, the help of a stray dog could have been life-saving, in the cold, winter woods not only fear but also the temperature could have been a great danger to the little girl.

Dogs increase the sense of security

We have already reported on several studies in the pages of azenkutyam.hu, which on human emotions feelings of dogs. In a tight situation, the company of another living being is of great importance, because they can relieve anxiety and even avoid panic situations. For example, a Swiss study measured the effects of petting dogs on the human brain. As it turned out,

prefrontal brain activity increased during contact with the dog or stuffed animal, but activity was higher in the dog. This suggests that interaction with a dog may activate more attention-related processes and trigger stronger emotional arousal than similar non-living stimuli. This difference was largest for petting, which was the most interactive condition.

The results show that just looking at the dogs is enough to achieve a positive effect. The increased activity was already apparent, but physical contact triggered a greater increase. Perhaps needless to say, in a situation such as the one described above, the key is to avoid panic and aimless running away. This is perhaps even more difficult for a young child than for a more conscious adult. And although they probably would have found the lost girl without the help of the stray dog, perhaps the company of the stray dog was the might have mitigated the long-term effects a little.
