Every dog navigates the water differently; they each have their own method. Some swim, while it seems others prefer to walk.

Every dog has its own quirks, which owners wouldn’t trade even if they occasionally cause frustration. Sometimes, these strange habits need to be investigated because they might not be good for the dog. However, often these are just peculiarities that are part of the animal’s personality. Such is the case with the swimming technique of the dog named Drake, seen below. Although not very effective, it is definitely adorable.

The unique swimming dog

The Golden Retriever’s unique swimming technique has garnered thousands of views and 2.9 million likes because it offers an unusual sight. After all, his movements are spot on, with his front paws paddling diligently and the back ones moving too. However, it seems that either Drake doesn’t like being on the water’s surface or finds swimming too tiring. Since his back legs can still touch the bottom, he doesn’t feel the need to swim fully. We can relate to this feeling when we walk on tiptoes but don’t want to swim, just enjoy the cooling water. It could also be that he is conserving his energy, as dog paddling is indeed a tiring activity!

Jokes aside, Drake didn’t develop this swimming technique on his own; he learned it from his owner’s other dog. The pair is not alone: on social media, there are several dogs (interestingly, primarily Golden Retrievers) who enjoy the cool water of the pool in a similar, “human-like” manner.

The star of the video below, Oatmeal, for example, rests like this after a tiring swim:

Not every dog can swim

Although Drake can swim effortlessly when needed and even dives along the shore to collect shells, not every dog finds life in the water so easy. As mentioned in our article, some dogs have body types that make swimming difficult. There are also dogs who simply don’t move as comfortably in the water as their counterparts bred for waterfowl hunting. Such “disadvantaged” dogs probably need some assistance. It can also be said with certainty that not every furry four-legged friend takes to swimming on their first try. Therefore, even in shallow water, a life jacket can provide increased confidence (and safety).
